All Calibres Sketches-01Used primarily to hunt varmint and small game, the 22-250 Remington is a very high velocity caliber.  Despite its somewhat uncertain origins, it is undoubtedly one of the most popular mid-sized cartridges in the U.S. today.  Hunting dog breeds such as coyote and prairie dogs have proven to be strong favorites with this caliber.  The 22-250 Remington is furthermore able to reach targets at a mid-range level, easily downing targets at a 400 yard distance (considered to be a good distance achieved for this size caliber).

Along with the .308, this caliber relies on the hydrostatic shock effect it creates when hitting a target, whereby shock-waves are sent through the bodily fluids of the prey to produce remote wounding and incapacitation.  Those both familiar and comfortable with the 22-250 Remington tend to swear by its efficiency, accuracy, dependability and ease of use.  These qualities make this caliber ideal for hunting for beginners.

It should be noted, however, that although the 22-250 has sometimes been considered to be too small a caliber to be considered a real deer hunting caliber (it has been outlawed for this purpose in some U.S. states), advances in bullet tips types, along with the 22-250’s great tolerance for variable powder levels, has increased its efficiency and popularity amongst deer hunters as well, especially when used with a recognized, good deer hunting rifle.

Why the 22-250 is a popular hunting caliber:

  • Economical cartridge: The caliber requires a smaller powder load, which makes it a very economical cartridge for reloading bullets.
  • Trustworthy & Accurate: Accuracy on the 22-250 is generally very good, making it a reliable and trustworthy caliber.
  • Higher velocities: Velocities of over 4 000 feet per second can easily be achieved with a comparatively light powder load, thereby creating sufficient energy to hunt small to medium sized game.
  • Versatility on small game hunts: The 22-250 is a versatile caliber, offering the hunter the opportunity to hunt a variety of smaller game.
  • Flexible load handling: The 22-250 is a very flexible and tolerant cartridge, able to handle loads varying between 35 grains and 60 grains, and performing very well at various different velocities.
